Taking the MRT SMRT air con electrical & solar is one of the greenest ways to travel, with SMRT’s train stations using smart technologies to reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions. For example, SMRT Trains is collaborating with Thales to optimise the performance of its CBTC system, and the technology will help the North-South and East-West lines (NSEWL) save traction energy by 15%.
Another green initiative is the use of intelligent facilities management, which enables SMRT to adjust its heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) settings through predictive Artificial Intelligence (AI), reducing energy consumption while maintaining passenger comfort. It is currently trialled at Paya Lebar and MacPherson, with a target of saving between 5 to 10 per cent at each underground station. This will result in energy savings of 105 to 210 megawatt hours per year at each station, which is equivalent to the annual energy usage of 1,080 five-room HDB flats!
Other green initiatives include the installation of energy-efficient features such as platform screen doors, solar photovoltaic systems, motion sensors to switch off lights and fans in toilets and staff rooms, and energy-saving escalators. During off peak hours, we also switch off lights in unused areas, and only operate the fans and escalators that are most needed. This helps to minimise energy usage at our stations, and has helped us earn the BCA Green Mark Gold Plus for all SMRT stations.
